Privacy Policy for the r/aircanada Community Statistics App
Effective date: 25 October 2026 Last updated: 25 October 2026
This policy explains what the r/aircanada Community Statistics App (the "App") collects, why, where it goes, how long it is kept, and how to reach the person responsible. It is written to be read in a few minutes. If anything here is unclear, use the contact at the end.
1. Who operates the App
The App is operated by a volunteer moderator of the Reddit community r/aircanada (the "Operator"), acting in a personal capacity as a community moderator. The App is not made, run or endorsed by Reddit, Inc., by Air Canada, or by any airline. The moderators of r/aircanada as a group are not the operator of the App and are not responsible for it; see the Terms of Service.
The Operator is located in Ontario, Canada. Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA) and its ten fair information principles guide how the App handles personal information.
2. What the App does
The App is a moderator tool installed on r/aircanada through Reddit's Developer Platform. Three times a day it records a copy of the community's public activity and of the moderation work done on it, so the moderators can see what the community talks about, how often, and how moderation decisions are made over time. Nothing the App does is visible to community members inside Reddit.
3. What information the App collects
Everything the App collects is content that members have already posted to r/aircanada or actions moderators have already taken there. The App never asks anyone for information and never collects anything from a member's device, browser or account.
Specifically, the App records:
- Posts: title, text, link address, Reddit permalink, the Reddit username and account ID of the author, post flair, score, comment count, report count, creation time, and the post's status (live, removed by a moderator, filtered by Automoderator, deleted by its author, removed by Reddit, or marked as spam).
- Comments: text, Reddit permalink, the Reddit username and account ID of the author, score, report count, creation and edit times, position in the thread, and status as above.
- Moderation log: the type of action, the moderator's Reddit username, the time, the moderator's written reason, and which post or comment it applied to.
- Moderation queues: which posts and comments were waiting for review, filtered, reported or removed at the time of each check.
- Community totals: subscriber count and active member count at the time of each check.
The App does not collect images, video or other media; it keeps only the web address of a link. It does not collect private messages, modmail, votes by individual members, email addresses, IP addresses, device information or anything from outside r/aircanada.
4. Why the App collects it
The App exists so that the moderators of r/aircanada can understand their community: which topics come up, how often, when they spike, how many posts are held or declined and why, and how the community grows. These are the purposes, and the App is not used for any other purpose:
- Producing counts, trends and summaries of what the community discusses.
- Reviewing moderation activity: what is held, approved, declined, and the reasons given.
- Showing how the community changes over time.
The App is not used to profile, target, contact, rank or take action against any individual member. It does not serve or target advertising. It is not used to train, fine-tune or improve any artificial intelligence or machine learning model.
5. Where the information goes and who can see it
Information moves through three places, all private:
- Reddit's own servers, inside the App's storage, where Reddit's Developer Platform keeps it for the App.
- A private cloud storage bucket in the United States (Amazon Web Services, N. Virginia region) owned by the Operator, used as a drop box. Each copy there is deleted automatically after 30 days at most.
- The Operator's private analysis system, hosted on Cloudflare's network, where summaries, counts and topic groupings will be produced. Access will be limited to people the Operator has individually named and authorised, each with their own login; nobody has access by default.
Because the information is processed in the United States and on a global network, it may be subject to the laws of those countries and could be accessed by their authorities under those laws.
Personal information, including usernames and account IDs, is seen only by the moderators of r/aircanada and the people the Operator has authorised. Anything shared outside that group is anonymised first: it is limited to aggregated figures, trends and summaries from which usernames, account IDs and individual posts or comments have been removed (for example, "complaints about delays rose 40% in March"). Such anonymised summaries may be shared with third parties, including the airline the community discusses.
The App and the Operator will never sell personal information or usernames, and do not license or rent any information or share it with advertisers, data brokers or analytics vendors.
6. Deleted content
Reddit tells the App when a post or comment has been deleted or removed, by its author, by a moderator or by Reddit. When that happens, the App blanks the title, text, link, address and author from every copy it holds, including the comments under a deleted post, the related moderation-log entries and any copy that has already been exported. Only the item's identifier, timing, flair and status remain, so counts stay accurate. Once an item has been blanked, the App will never store its text again.
When a Reddit account is deleted, the App removes that account's username and ID from the posts and comments it holds, on a rolling check that runs with every collection.
7. How long information is kept
- Reddit-side copy: kept for as long as the App is installed on r/aircanada. Uninstalling the App destroys it.
- Drop box copy: 30 days at most, then deleted automatically.
- Analysis copy: kept to allow long-term trend reporting, with deleted content blanked as described in section 6. The Operator reviews what is held once a year and removes data no longer needed for the purposes in section 4.
8. Security
The App has no public interface. The credential it uses to move data out of Reddit is stored as an encrypted app secret and can only write to a single private location; it cannot read, list or delete anything. The analysis system will sit behind a login that only named people hold. Data is encrypted in transit everywhere, and the copies held outside Reddit are encrypted at rest. No system is perfectly secure, and the Operator will inform affected members and the relevant authority of a breach where the law requires it.
9. Your rights
You can ask the Operator:
- whether the App holds information about your Reddit account, and to see it;
- to correct information that is inaccurate;
- to blank your posts or comments from the App's copies, in addition to deleting them on Reddit;
- any question about this policy, or to make a complaint about how your information was handled.
Requests are answered within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with the response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca).
The fastest way to blank content from the App is to delete it on Reddit: the App acts on Reddit's deletion notice automatically.
10. Children
Reddit requires its users to be at least 13 years old. The App does not knowingly collect information about anyone under 13; the App is a copy of content already on Reddit and relies on Reddit's age requirements. If you believe the App holds information about a child under 13, contact the Operator and it will be blanked.
11. Changes to this policy
Changes are posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date. A material change is also announced in a post on r/aircanada.
12. Contact
Send a message to the moderators of r/aircanada through Reddit modmail (reddit.com/message/compose?to=/r/aircanada) with "Statistics App" in the subject. Modmail is read by the moderators; requests about the App are handled by the Operator, who is the person accountable for this policy.
